Dirt track racing is a type of auto racing performed on clay or dirt surfaced oval tracks. It is the single most common form of auto racing in the United States. There are hundreds of local and regional racetracks throughout the nation.

Oval track racing is a form of closed-circuit automobile racing that is contested on an oval shaped track. They often have banked turns and are not precisely oval, and can have unique variances in shape.
Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance.
Off-road racing is a format of racing where various classes of specially modified vehicles (including cars, trucks, motorcycles, and buggies) compete in races through off road environments.
Road racing is normally held on a paved closed circuit with both left and right turns. May be on purpose-built race tracks or on temporary circuits, such as closed-off airport runways and public roads.
Diesel is not normally preferred for speed racing, due to the generally higher weight. However, diesel vehicles may in some events be classed independently of other competitors such as off road trials.
